MULTI-ENGINE RATING

Overview:

The Multi-Engine Rating is designed for certificated pilots who want to expand their flying capabilities by earning a Multi-Engine Land (MEL) rating. Whether you're pursuing a career in aviation or seeking advanced skills for personal flying, this course will prepare you to safely and confidently operate complex multi-engine aircraft. This rating has no expiration and opens the door to advanced career opportunities in commercial aviation.

Through focused ground instruction and practical flight training, you’ll learn the systems, aerodynamics, and procedures unique to multi-engine operations—including critical engine handling, single-engine performance, and emergency procedures.

Key Training Topics:

  • Multi-engine aerodynamics and performance

  • Engine-out procedures and single-engine operations

  • Vmc (minimum control speed) awareness and demonstration

  • Complex aircraft systems: fuel, electrical, and propeller controls

  • Weight and balance considerations for multi-engine aircraft

  • Engine failure recognition and decision-making

  • IFR procedures in a multi-engine environment (if applicable)

Requirements:

  • Valid Private Pilot or Commercial Pilot Certificate

  • Current FAA Medical Certificate

  • Recent flight experience (per FAR 61.57 recommended)

  • Instrument rating not required, but is recommended for IFR proficiency

  • While there is not a specific number of hours required to obtain a multi-engine rating, it typically takes people anywhere from 10-15 hours in the aircraft to develop the skills need to pass a checkride.
